ABOUT COVE POINT CONSULTING

Cove Point Consulting helps construction and trades business owners step back from the day-to-day, see what they may be too close to see, and make better decisions about the business they have worked so hard to build.

The owners we work with are not necessarily running failing companies. Many have built profitable, respected businesses with good customers, busy teams, and years of hard-earned success. But over time, the business may have become increasingly dependent on them. Important decisions still land on their desk. Problems continue to escalate to them. Managers may handle tasks without carrying full responsibility. Even when the owner is away, part of their attention remains at work.

Cove Point exists to help change that. Our role is not to walk in with a collection of generic answers. It is to bring experienced outside perspective, ask the questions that need to be asked, help identify what is actually happening, and work with the owner to determine the right course forward.

Better decisions build better businesses. Better businesses create better lives.

The Foundation Behind Cove Point Consulting

Cove Point is built around a clear purpose: help business owners gain perspective, make better decisions, and build stronger companies without losing sight of what those businesses were meant to support.

Our Mission

Our Mission

Cove Point Consulting exists to help business owners see what they may be too close to see, make better decisions, and build stronger businesses that support, not consume, the lives they were created to sustain.

Our Mission

Our Vision

A future where business success strengthens, rather than sacrifices, the leaders, teams, families, and lives it was meant to support.

Our Mission

Our Core Belief

Better decisions build better businesses. Better businesses create better lives.

Our Mission

Our Purpose

Help business owners see the rocks before they hit them. Our purpose comes from a question that shaped Rodney’s own experience and continues to guide Cove Point today: “What am I not seeing?”

Executive Leadership Mentoring

I’ve Been in the Owner’s Chair

I’m Rodney, founder of Cove Point Consulting.

I have spent more than 45 years in construction and business, including nearly 20 years owning and operating a successful general contracting company. My experience was built on jobsites, around employees, customers, subcontractors, schedules, budgets, difficult decisions, and the everyday realities of running a company.

I know what it is like to carry responsibility for a business because I have done it. I have experienced growth and success, but I have also experienced difficult employees, financial pressure, leadership challenges, mistakes, workaholism, personal failures, and the consequences of allowing a business to become too central to life.

For a long time, I believed hard work solved almost everything. That belief helped me succeed. It also created blind spots I could not see.

The Question That Changed My Perspective

There were periods in my life when I lost my bearings. My instinct was to respond the way I always had: work harder, become more productive, solve the next problem, and keep moving.

I changed circumstances before I had fully changed myself. I repeated patterns I could not yet recognize. Eventually, I began to understand that some problems cannot be solved by applying more effort to them.

The question had to change. Instead of asking, “Why does this keep happening to me?” I began asking, “What am I not seeing?”

That question became one of the foundations of Cove Point Consulting. Looking back, I can see things clearly today that I could not see while I was living through them. Not because the information was hidden, but because I was standing too close to it.

That experience taught me something I believe applies to business owners as well.

The Hardest Business to Evaluate Objectively Is Often the One You Built Yourself

Owners know their businesses better than anyone. They also live inside them every day.

They know the employees, customers, history, relationships, old decisions, past successes, past failures, and the reasons certain things have always been done a certain way. That knowledge is valuable. It can also make objectivity difficult.

A staffing problem may actually be a leadership problem. A profitability problem may begin in estimating, accountability, operations, pricing, or process. A time-management problem may have very little to do with the calendar and much more to do with the number of decisions that still require the owner.

Blind spots are not evidence that an owner is incapable. They are often a natural consequence of being close to the business. Sometimes an experienced outside perspective changes what the owner is able to see.

“The new supervisory structures allowed me to finally take a weekend off. My team now handles field issues without calling me constantly.”

“The leadership training completely changed how I manage my employees. I no longer feel the need to micromanage every project site.”

“Promoting from within gave our company a massive boost in morale. The new managers took ownership of their departments immediately.”

Why Cove Point Exists

Cove Point Consulting grew from a lesson I learned later than I wish I had: some of the behaviors that make us successful enough to build a business are the very behaviors that can eventually make the business, and our lives, depend too heavily on us.

Hard work can become workaholism. Responsibility can become control. Independence can become isolation. Problem-solving can become the belief that every problem needs to come through the owner. Being indispensable can begin as a strength and eventually become a liability.

I became the kind of business owner I now want to help.

Today, my purpose is simple: help other owners see the rocks before they hit them.

That does not mean pretending to know every answer. It means bringing experience, perspective, candor, and a willingness to ask questions that may help an owner see the business differently.

Strategic Guidance for Construction and Trades Business Owners

Cove Point is not built around motivational coaching or one-size-fits-all business advice. Rodney works as a strategic business advisor, helping owners examine the business as a whole and understand what may be limiting its performance, leadership, independence, or ability to support the life the owner wants.

As a construction business consultant, Rodney brings firsthand knowledge of the pressures that come with leading a contracting company, managing people, making difficult decisions, and carrying responsibility for the outcome.

Depending on what is happening inside the company, the engagement may draw on the perspective of a business coach, the practical insight of a construction business coach, or the broader organizational view of a business management consultant. These are not separate answers to isolated problems. They are capabilities used within a larger strategic advisory relationship.

When leadership capacity is part of the issue, executive leadership mentoring can help managers develop stronger judgment, accountability, communication, and confidence so more responsibility can be carried throughout the organization.

The first objective is always the same: let’s understand what’s really happening.

Experience Matters. So Does Humility.

More than four decades in construction and business provides perspective. It does not mean every business is the same.

Every owner has a different company, team, history, set of pressures, and definition of success. Cove Point does not begin an engagement by assuming the answer before understanding the situation.

Experience should make an advisor better at recognizing patterns, asking questions, challenging assumptions, and identifying issues that deserve a closer look. It should not create the belief that the advisor already knows everything.

That is why one of Cove Point’s core principles is Perspective Before Prescription.

We seek to understand before we advise.

Leadership Development For Managers

A Better Business Is Not Simply a Bigger Business

Growth can be good. But growth without structure can create more complexity, more pressure, and even greater dependence on the owner.

Cove Point believes the better question is not simply, “How big can this company become?” It is, “What kind of business are we building?”

A better business performs financially, develops leaders, creates opportunity, serves customers well, creates enterprise value, and increasingly functions without constant owner intervention.

It also protects the owner’s time. It creates choices. And it supports the relationships, family, health, and life that the business was supposed to help make possible in the first place.

Bigger isn’t always better. Better is better.

Operational System Implementation

The Cove Point Method™

Find Your Bearings. Chart Your Course. Navigate With Confidence.

Cove Point uses a structured process to turn perspective into practical action.

Find Your Bearings

This stage begins with discovery and diagnosis. We examine where the business stands today, separate symptoms from root causes, and identify what may not be immediately visible from inside the company.

Chart Your Course

Once the situation is clearer, we establish priorities and build a practical roadmap. Rather than trying to fix everything at once, we determine what matters most, what should happen next, who is responsible, and what progress should look like.

Navigate With Confidence

This is where the roadmap becomes execution. Through ongoing strategic guidance, accountability, measurement, leadership development, and course correction, the owner keeps moving toward the destination without handing the responsibility for running the company to Cove Point.

The objective is not to make the owner dependent on an advisor. It is to help build a business that depends less on any one person.

What We Believe

Cove Point believes business success should create freedom, not consume it.

We believe exhaustion is not proof of leadership. We believe owners should be able to develop people who can carry real responsibility. We believe the most obvious problem is not always the real problem. We believe accountability starts with leadership.

We also believe asking for an outside perspective is not a sign of weakness. Strong leaders are willing to consider what they may not be seeing.

That belief sits behind everything we do: Better decisions build better businesses. Better businesses create better lives.

Leadership Development For Managers

Build a Business That Supports the Life You’re Trying to Create

You may already have a successful company. The question is whether that success is creating the kind of business and life you intended.

If every important decision still depends on you, if growth has created more complexity than freedom, or if you know something needs to change but are too close to the business to know where to begin, a conversation may help bring the situation into focus.

Schedule a Confidential Discovery Conversation

No pitch. No obligation. Just a conversation about where your business is today, where you would like it to go, and what may be standing in the way.
